FIU cybersecurity researchers have found that websites requesting access to your files can bypass antivirus software and launch ransomware attacks by encrypting your data. The attack requires a user to click “yes” on two pop-ups, which then grants a malicious website control over files across major operating systems and cloud services. Led by Professor Selcuk Uluagac, the study, presented at the USENIX Security Symposium, highlights how browser APIs can be exploited for these attacks. The researchers propose integrated browser defenses, file-monitoring applications, and warning systems to mitigate this emerging threat, with plans to extend their research to smartphones.
