Modern browsers now have the power to access your local file system, which hackers can exploit via the File System Access API to launch ransomware attacks. FIU researchers demonstrated this threat by developing RøB, a browser-based ransomware that can encrypt files across multiple operating systems while evading traditional antivirus software. They proposed defense strategies such as halting suspicious web applications, monitoring file activity, and introducing clearer permission dialogs. This research highlights that being cautious with file uploads is just as important as being careful with downloads.
