Dr. Mark A. Finlayson is an Eminent Scholar Chaired Associate Professor of Computer Science at the Knight Foundation School of Computing and Information Sciences at FIU. He earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science and Cognitive Science from MIT in 2012. Before joining FIU, he was a Research Scientist at MIT’s CSAIL. Dr. Finlayson’s research focuses on higher-order semantic patterns in natural language, particularly in narrative, and intersects AI, computational linguistics, and cognitive science. He directs the Cognac Laboratory, which explores the science of narrative from a computational perspective. His work has been supported by NSF, NIH, DARPA, and other agencies. He received an NSF CAREER Award in 2018, and an IBM Faculty Award in 2019, and was named an Edison Fellow for AI at the USPTO. He has also earned multiple teaching awards and the FIU Faculty Award for Research and Creative Activities in 2019.
